There are several books that are my inspiration as to how to tell my story which is based on a true passage of time and varied events interwoven into fiction. There is beauty and cruelty in true events.
All the books that inspire me to deal with these true life dramas have an elevating message of hope and an emotional coming of age of the hero involved.
I like the way life retold in a novel is handled in "To Kill a Mocking Bird."
There was a rape retold and incest suggested in a courtroom, a threatened lynching, an attempted child murder, a man murdered and an escape from the law shot.
You read it all, heard and saw a little of it and understood what was happening, yet you never had to look away.
All the while, despite that book telling a story of man's inhumanity to man and a time when the laws were wrong, it was the story of a coming of age of the MCs - the children and the town, told in a gentle way that shows real people with real emotions.
I was also told in the authors own unique style, something I especially admire.
